Services are background processes that run without a GUI window. They are similar to DOS TSRs and UNIX daemons. The Computer Management console shows the status of all services.

The properties of each service control their startup behaviour;

  • Automatically at startup,
  • By manually pressing the Start button, or
  • Disabled

Each service has a recovery option for when it fails for the first time, second time, or on subsequent failures. The default is to Take No Action and the other options are shown in the following dialog.

Keyboard Exercise

Investigate a service's properties by examining the General and Recovery options.
